7/8 Grade Genetics Fun

A fun way to practice genetics is by playing the game "Thingdom!"   There is also a worksheet that I would like you to print and complete while we are working with in the Thingdom game.  We will be working with this site for a bit in class before your test on Wednesday.

Today in Science

Hello Future Scientists!!  Here's a recap of today and a look ahead:


7/8 Grade--read section 5.2 and do the self check questions 1-5 at the end of the chapter.  For Extra Credit--bring a color drawing of the Monster we "created" in class today--it should have red eyes, green and blue fur, a lion's tail, long ears, an elephant's nose, and you choose if it was a boy or a girl!:)



6 Grade--we are working on cell organelles and creating a 3D cell in class!  They are going to be AWESOME!  Look for photos to be posted after Friday.


5 Grade--we are preparing a Biome Museum Exhibit to be displayed next week!

6th Grade Science Cell Project

Using Microsoft Office Powerpoint OR Google Presentation OR Microsoft Paint, please draw/create an animal cell with the following organelles drawn, labeled, and tell the function of each organelle--you may use the book and/or your notes from yesterday to help you.  (Hint:  You might use different shapes or clip art)  When you are done make sure the cell diagram has your name on it, print it, and turn it in.  By the way, spelling counts:)

Golgi Apparatus
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Mitochondria
Lysosomes
Ribosomes
Vacuoles

When you have finished this project, you may go play THIS game! (In this game, they call the cell membrane the plasma membrane)

7/8 Grade DNA Project

Hi Guys!  While I'm gone today--I've got a lot of fun planned for you:)   You should have received a worksheet from your sub today so here is how you complete the worksheet:

1.  Go to this site: http://www.nature.ca/genome/04/0413_e.cfm
2.  Type in your first name and record your DNA codons on your worksheet.
3.  Go to this site:  http://www.nature.ca/genome/05/051/0511/0511_m205_e.cfm.  Scroll down until about mid way through the page and follow the instructions to make your "DNA on a String Zipper Pull"
4.  After you have finished your zipper pull, you will go to this site:  http://www.nature.ca/genome/04/041/0415_e.cfm to answer questions on your sheet about "Copy Cat."
5.  After "Copy Cat"  go to this site: http://www.nature.ca/genome/04/041/041_e.cfm and play "Race the Cell" and record your answers on your sheet.
6.  Turn in your sheet at the end of class today!  Hope you learned a lot and had a little fun:)

Mitosis and Meiosis

Hi future scientists! This weekend, please complete the webquest I have shared with you in google docs. IMPORTANT--remember to "make a copy" under the File tab and rename it your first initial and last initial with the word mitosis. EX. JWMITOSIS. Then share your completed webquest with me by Monday science time. If you need to print a copy you may do that instead.

Start Spreading the News..

After a vacation to NYC,  we quickly returned back to business today!  Here is a recap of what happened in class and a glimpse at your future:)

7/8 Grade-PROGRESS REPORTS WENT HOME and tests from Chapter 3 went home.  PROGRESS REPORTS NEED TO RECEIVE A PARENT SIGNATURE AND THEN I WILL RETURN THEM BACK TO YOU.  A valuable lesson was learned by all that we should REALLY read our chapter.  I know our next test will be even better:)  We learn from our mistakes (including me).  TONIGHT read Section 4.1 and take the quiz for 4.1  send your quiz to athill@crosslcmsschool.orgI WILL EMAIL YOUR SCHOOL/STUDENT EMAIL TO LET YOU KNOW I HAVE RECEIVED YOUR QUIZ.  No email from me means I have not received your quiz!

6th Grade--Chemistry Review--no homework tonight--PROGRESS REPORTS WENT HOME, please have a parent sign and return tomorrow.

5th Grade--Worked on Food Web powerpoint project and talked about the carbon cycle.  READ D34-D35--quiz tomorrow!
